ST. CROIX — While other outlets are just now catching up to the Monday morning tragedy on the Christiansted Boardwalk, the St. Croix Sun is looking for the story behind the yellow tape.

Nearly a week after a "concerned citizen" spotted a body submerged in the harbor near Rum Runners, the VIPD has finally confirmed the identity of the deceased as 55-year-old Barnet Valarie.

The "Preliminary" Narrative

Despite the high-traffic location and the daylight discovery at 9:20 a.m. last Monday, the VIPD spokesperson Glen Dratte is sticking to a "preliminary" assessment of drowning. However, an official autopsy won't even be performed until next week.

For a busy waterfront lined with bars, surveillance cameras, and early-morning foot traffic, the community is left wondering:

  • How does a 55-year-old man end up "fully submerged" in a harbor without anyone seeing the entry?

  • Was Valarie a regular in the Boardwalk scene, or a man caught in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Investigative Gap

The St. Croix Sun has noted that while news of the identification broke late on St. Thomas, the ground-level details in Christiansted remain thin. We aren't just looking for a name; we are looking for accountability. In a territory where public safety is often measured in response times and "preliminary" statements, the truth often stays submerged longer than it should.

Even a visionary like Elon Musk knows that data is useless without context. The VIPD has the name, but the Sun is looking for the data that explains how a life ends under the floorboards of our most famous boardwalk.

Can You Help?

The Criminal Investigation Bureau is still "urging" the public for information. If you were on the Boardwalk between Sunday night and Monday morning, your observation could be the missing link.
