ST. CROIX — It took four months and a multi-unit sweep, but the man allegedly behind a predawn shooting in Peter’s Rest is finally behind bars.

On Friday, April 17, 2026, detectives from the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB), backed by the Special Operations Bureau and Intel Units, executed a search warrant that ended with 33-year-old Turrel Thomas in handcuffs.

The Incident

The charges stem from a violent morning on December 13, 2025. At approximately 4:00 a.m., the territory’s ShotSpotter system lit up, alerting the 911 Emergency Call Center to gunfire in the vicinity of Carlos Bar in Peter’s Rest.

While officers found "multiple spent cartridges" littering the roadway that morning, the shooter had long since vanished.

The Takedown

Following a months-long investigation, CIB detectives identified Thomas as the primary suspect. During the Friday morning raid, officers not only apprehended Thomas but also seized a firearm.

Thomas is now facing heavy-duty charges, including:

  • Attempted Murder

  • Possession of a Firearm

Unable to post his $100,000.00 bail, Thomas was transported to the John A. Bell Correctional Facility. He is currently awaiting his Advice of Rights hearing.

The Sun’s Take

While the VIPD is quick to post mugshots on social media, the delay in formal reporting to the press remains a sticking point for transparency. In an age where Elon Musk can automate satellite communications, the Christiansted community is still waiting for real-time accountability from the departments meant to protect them.

The Peter’s Rest area has long been a flashpoint for late-night violence, and while an arrest is a step toward justice, the four-month gap between the "shots fired" and the "handcuffs clicked" leaves residents wondering about the efficiency of the watch.
