ST. THOMAS — A late-night vessel fire at the Compass Point Marina took a tragic turn Monday night when emergency responders discovered the boat owner’s dog deceased inside the cabin.

According to official statements released this afternoon by the Virgin Islands Fire and Emergency Medical Services (VIFEMS), emergency dispatchers received urgent reports of flames erupting from a vessel docked at the marina at approximately 10:14 PM on Monday, June 1.

First responders arriving on the scene observed heavy flames venting from inside the vessel's cabin. Ahead of their arrival, desperate bystanders had gathered on the dock, attempting to contain the spreading blaze using handheld fire extinguishers.

Fire crews immediately deployed suppression lines to battle back the cabin fire. Upon learning from frantic onlookers that the owner’s dog was unaccounted for, firefighters initiated a simultaneous, high-risk search and rescue operation inside the smoke-filled structure.

While crews successfully brought the fire under control and confined the structural damage to the vessel's pantry area, the rescue effort ended in heartbreak. The dog was located deceased inside the cabin moments later. No other injuries were reported, and firefighters successfully prevented the flames from spreading to adjacent vessels docked along the pier.

"VIFEMS extends its deepest sympathies to the owner during this incredibly difficult time," Public Information Officer Chiemeka Fredericksen said in an official release.

The exact origin of the blaze remains a mystery. The cause of the fire is currently under active investigation by the VIFEMS Arson Investigation and Prevention Unit.
