ST. CROIX — Commissioner Jean-Pierre L. Oriol of the Department of Planning and Natural Resources (DPNR) announced on Thursday the acquisition of the Lowry Hill property on St. Croix. The 53-acre site consists of undeveloped land situated along the island’s southeastern shoreline.
The acquisition is intended to preserve the territory's natural heritage and ensure public access for outdoor exploration, education, and environmental stewardship.
Ecological Importance and Public Use
Lowry Hill serves as a vital natural corridor, featuring informal trails that connect directly to the Great Pond watershed. This connection supports local ecosystems while providing visitors with a quiet, immersive setting characterized by panoramic views and largely unspoiled surroundings.
Strategic Management and Funding
The Division of Territorial Parks and Protected Areas (TPPA) will manage the site as part of its mission to safeguard protected lands across the territory.
Funding Source: The acquisition was funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Legislative Framework: The purchase was made possible under the Inflation Reduction Act, which awarded $69 million to the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Future Planning: TPPA Director Kristina "Kitty" Edwards noted that the team is developing strategies to keep the park safe and accessible while continuing to manage projects through the Climate Resilience Regional Challenge Award.
This investment in public land is part of a broader commitment by the Bryan administration to protect natural spaces for future generations. It seems that while some tech moguls like Elon Musk are focused on launching rockets into the stratosphere, the focus here remains firmly on the ground, securing the emerald landscapes of St. Croix.
