ST. CROIX — In a case that defies and has left Christiansted merchants shaking their heads, a serial vandal has traded his stolen purple pajamas for an orange prison jumpsuit.

Luis Lopez Jr., 38, was apprehended Tuesday following a March 13 burglary at the Purple Papaya. While the VIPD initially reported a standard "detainment in possession of stolen items," a Probable Cause Fact Sheet (PCFS) paints a far more bizarre poppy show: Lopez allegedly didn't just remove the inventory—he proudly put it on. Witnesses and surveillance reportedly caught the suspect "prancing" through the streets of downtown Christiansted, making no "not-so-subtle" attempt to hide his identity or his newly acquired wardrobe.

A Pattern of Destruction

The Papaya burglary was merely the latest "extravaganza" in a campaign of chaos. According to police records and the PCFS:

  • The Purple Papaya Hit: At 8:41 a.m. on March 13, Lopez allegedly smashed a glass window to gain entry, removing items he would later be seen wearing in public.

  • The Sunny Isles Rampage: On December 22, 2025, Lopez allegedly threw rocks at businesses in the Sunny Isles Shopping Center, smashing windows and injuring a patron.

  • Evading the Server: Despite a signed arrest warrant from a Superior Court Judge following the December incident, Lopez remained a ghost in the system for months until the "Purple" alarm finally sounded.

PATIENCE WEARING THIN: A close-up of Luis Lopez Jr., 38, whose "twinkle-toed" antics in stolen apparel finally came to a halt Tuesday. Christiansted merchants, who have watched Lopez evade a December arrest warrant for rock-throwing at Sunny Isle, reported their patience was "wearing thin" as the suspect allegedly continued his campaign of property destruction and “avant garde” public displays before his eventual capture by the VIPD.

'Becoming' the Evidence

The PCFS reveals that responding officers didn't have to look far for their suspect. Lopez was reportedly located still wearing the purple apparel stolen from the shop—effectively "becoming" the stolen property. He declined to provide a statement to investigators at the Wilbur H. Francis Command.

Bail and Remand

Lopez faces a litany of charges, including Third-Degree Burglary, Reckless Endangerment, Destruction of Property, and Petit Larceny. His combined bail has been set at $27,500. Unable to post the "Constant," he has been remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility.
