ST. THOMAS — A chaotic 24-hour stretch kept the Virgin Islands Police Department Patrol Division working overtime mid-month, culminating in a series of arrests ranging from a spectacular DUI wreck to a bottle-throwing melee at a popular Havensite hangout.
The VIPD released the booking details late Tuesday, painting a picture of local law enforcement dealing with escalating public disturbances, court-order violations, and outright belligerence.
EMBANKMENT PLUNGE: Keezi Pinney, 41, was charged with Driving Under the Influence and negligent driving after a violent collision on Smith Bay Road sent her Toyota Tacoma careening 75 feet down a roadside embankment. (VIPD Booking Photo)
The Smith Bay Embankment Plunge: More Than a Routine DUI
While the initial police release noted a simple "vehicle collision" in Smith Bay, court records reveal a far more dramatic and disruptive scene on Smith Bay Road near the U.S. Customs and Border Protection building.
The Defendant: Keezi Pinney, 41.
The Incident: Pinney, driving a Toyota Tacoma, allegedly crossed the center dividing line into oncoming traffic, striking an oncoming Acura RDX. The force of the impact spun the Acura 180 degrees.
The Aftermath: Instead of stopping, Pinney’s truck continued forward, careening over the roadside embankment and plunging roughly 75 feet down before coming to a halt.
The Arrest: According to responding officers, Pinney was belligerent and highly disruptive on the scene, repeatedly clapping loudly to drown out the other driver's statements and refusing to hand over her license. At the station, she refused a breathalyzer test.
Docket Status: Pinney posted a $1,000 bail. At her advice of rights hearing, Magistrate Julie Smith Todman found probable cause to uphold the driving under the influence and negligent driving charges, ordering her driving privileges suspended pending arraignment.
HAVENSIGHT MELEE: William Mauk, 72, sporting a visible injury following a saloon brawl, was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections on $25,000 bail after allegedly "chucking" glass beer bottles at patrons inside a Havensight establishment. (VIPD Booking Photo)
Bottle-Chucking at Havensight: Senior Citizen Saloon Melee
A Friday night at Havensight turned into a dangerous bottleneck when a senior citizen allegedly weaponized glass beer bottles against fellow patrons.
The Defendant: William Mauk, 72.
The Incident: VIPD officers rushed to the Havensight Virgin Haven at 9:39 p.m. following reports of an active assault.
The Details: Complainants and witnesses pointed out Mauk, who heavily bore the physical evidence of a barroom brawl with a severely blackened, bloodied right eye. Police allege Mauk was actively "chucking" glass beer bottles at people with clear intent to injure and engaged in multiple physical altercations inside the establishment.
Docket Status: Charged with Third-Degree Assault. The court treated the incident with severe gravity, slapping the 72-year-old with a massive $25,000 bail. Mauk was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections.
FACING MULTIPLE CHARGES: Lawrence Edwards, 34, was arrested in the St. Peter area after allegedly violating a standing court order, assaulting two individuals, and striking a responding VIPD officer on the shoulder during a domestic disturbance call. (VIPD Booking Photo)
Double Assault & Cop Striking at St. Peter
The weekend craziness rounded out on Saturday night with a domestic call that quickly escalated into an attack on uniform personnel.
The Defendant: Lawrence Edwards, 34.
The Incident: Officers responded to a domestic disturbance call in the St. Peter area at 8:36 p.m.
The Details: A female complainant reported that Edwards had actively assaulted both her and another adult male on the property, directly violating an active court protective order. When police attempted to intervene, an aggressive and uncooperative Edwards allegedly doubled down, striking a responding officer on the shoulder.
Docket Status: Charged with Simple Assault (DV), Violation of a Court Order, and Aggravated Assault. Edwards was denied immediate bail and remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his Advice of Rights.
The Sunlight Perspective: This sudden surge in aggressive public behavior across St. Thomas underscores a growing strain on local patrol resources. It’s the kind of localized volatility that makes you look at regional tech expansion with a different lens—if aerospace giants or high-tech manufacturing ever take root in the territory, modernized infrastructure and private-public security overhauls will likely have to lead the charge just to keep the peace.
