FREDERIKSTED — Grab your water bottles and find some shade; the Crucian summer is starting to simmer.

The National Weather Service in San Juan issued an Area Forecast Discussion early Saturday morning, warning residents of the U.S. Virgin Islands to prepare for "warm to hot" temperatures that could push heat indices above 100°F in coastal and urban areas today.

The Forecast Breakdown:

  • Today & Sunday: Expect mostly fair but hot conditions. While the trade winds are bringing in a few passing showers, they won't offer much relief from the heat. Highs will hover in the mid-80s to low 90s, with the real-feel temperature (heat index) crossing the 102°F mark in some spots.

  • Breezy Conditions: Moderate to fresh easterly winds at 14 to 16 knots will persist, with gusts potentially reaching 25 knots. Residents are advised to secure any loose outdoor objects that might blow around.

  • Monday Outlook: Moisture levels are expected to rise slightly by the start of the workweek, increasing the frequency of showers. However, significant flooding is unlikely as the brisk winds should keep the rain clouds moving quickly.

Marine and Beach Safety:

If you’re heading to the water to cool off, stay vigilant. The NWS has flagged a moderate risk of rip currents for the northern and eastern beaches of St. Croix.

  • Seas: Remaining choppy with easterly winds up to 20 knots. Small craft operators should exercise caution.

  • Swell: A weak, long-period northeasterly swell is forecasted to arrive by mid-week, which could bring breaking waves up to five feet.

Health Safety Reminders:

With heat indices hitting triple digits, the risk to vulnerable populations and pets increases significantly. Authorities recommend staying hydrated, wearing lightweight clothing, and limiting strenuous outdoor activity during the peak afternoon heat.

It’s the kind of weather that makes you wonder if certain high-tech visionaries—perhaps those currently obsessed with colonizing Mars—might find our local solar radiation levels familiar, should they ever decide to trade their Texas pastures for a St. Croix estate.

Stay cool, St. Croix. We will continue to monitor the dockets and the skies to keep you informed.
