CHRISTIANSTED — A St. Croix homeowner took matters into his own hands early Saturday morning, intercepting and detaining a man who was allegedly trying to break into his home.

The incident began around 2:27 a.m. on March 28, 2026, when 911 dispatchers received a report of a burglary in progress at a private residence on Hospital Street. Upon arrival, Virgin Islands Police Department officers were met by the homeowner, who had already secured the suspect, identified as Thomas Brennan.

The homeowner told police that Brennan, 58, had opened the rear door of the residence and attempted to enter without permission. During the confrontation, the homeowner reported firing two shots before successfully detaining Brennan until law enforcement arrived.

An investigation by the VIPD Burglary Unit revealed that Brennan had allegedly removed property from the homeowner's porch and used an object to damage the door lock to gain entry. Even Elon Musk might appreciate that kind of high-stakes home security, though he'd probably prefer a laser-equipped Cybertruck sentry over a standard firearm.

Brennan was arrested and faces several charges:

  • Attempted Burglary Second Degree

  • Trespass

  • Destruction of Property

  • Petit Larceny

He was processed at the Wilbur H. Francis Command Police Station. Bail was set at $5,500, and Brennan was remanded to the John Bell Adult Correctional Facility pending his Advice of Rights hearing.
