ST. THOMAS — The Virgin Islands Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is actively investigating a fatal shooting that occurred late Wednesday night in the area of Mahogany Run Villas. The victim has been positively identified by next of kin as 34-year-old Michiah Morton.

According to official emergency dispatch records, the incident began unfolding on the morning of Thursday, June 25, 2026. At approximately 6:35 a.m., a concerned citizen placed a call to the 911 Emergency Call Center to report an unresponsive male lying on the side of the road within the residential complex.

VIPD Patrol Units were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, responding officers discovered Morton’s body exhibiting multiple severe gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel arrived shortly thereafter and concluded that the victim showed no signs of life, officially pronouncing him dead at the scene.

The Temporal Window of the Attack

Homicide detectives tracking the case have narrowed down the active temporal window of the shooting. Based on ballistic evidence, forensic grid patterns, and localized audio intelligence, investigators believe the fatal shooting took place between 11:00 p.m. and midnight on Wednesday, June 24—roughly seven hours before the body was discovered by commuters.

A secondary vehicle and a firearm were located in close proximity to the body on the side of the road, which forensic units have processed for latent prints and DNA sequencing.

The VIPD is aggressively canvassing the community for surveillance footage or eyewitness testimony. Authorities are urging anyone who was in the vicinity of Mahogany Run Villas between 11:00 p.m. Wednesday and the early hours of Thursday morning to come forward with information regarding unknown vehicles or anomalous activity.

🔍 DOCKET WATCH: The Anatomy of a Timeline

In high-profile homicide investigations like the June 25 discovery of 34-year-old Michiah Morton at Mahogany Run Villas, temporal accuracy is everything for a newsroom. Minutes matter when building a public record, tracking police movements, or soliciting vital community tips.

While other territorial publications—including the legacy print desk at the Virgin Islands Daily News—stumbled out of the gate by publishing a conflicting and fundamentally flawed VIPD investigative timeline, the St. Croix Sun News maintains a strict "Direct-to-Dockets" standard. By cross-referencing raw emergency dispatch logs and immediate field dockets rather than relying on secondary regurgitations, our newsroom ensured that the critical hours surrounding the shooting were mapped with clinical precision from day one.

As territorial journalism increasingly transitions behind digital subscription paywalls, the value of your news feed relies entirely on the accuracy of its source material. The St. Croix Sun News remains committed to verified, unvarnished public data—not convenient shorthand.
