CHARLOTTE AMALIE, ST. THOMAS — A pre-dawn sector patrol across Crown Bay and Subbase devolved into a high-speed vehicle pursuit across primary thoroughfares, culminating in a deadly wreck at Vitraco Mall and the confiscation of four illegal weapons—including a fully automatic machine pistol—according to sworn police complaints filed Tuesday in Superior Court.
Danllerli Cabrera, 23, faced Magistrate Judge Simone M. VanHolten-Turnbull for his Advice of Rights hearing on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, answering to a nine-count felony docket featuring unlicensed gun possession, grand larceny of stolen property, and first-degree reckless endangerment. Unable to secure a $500,000 cash bond upon release from Roy Lester Schneider Hospital, Cabrera was remanded to the custody of the Bureau of Corrections.
The deadly sequence began at roughly 4:20 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, when Virgin Islands Police Department officers spotted an occupied Toyota Corolla bearing license plate AF-1524 idling near Beehive in Subbase. The car matched the description of a vehicle reported stolen earlier in the week. When patrol units, joined by the Special Response Team (SRT) and enforcement personnel from the Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority, boxed in the vehicle along Terrance A. Todman Drive, the operator feigned compliance before stomping the gas pedal, ramming the passenger side of police cruiser PD-292, and fleeing onto Moravian Highway.
RESTRICTED BAIL: Danllerli Cabrera, 23, appears in a Virgin Islands Police Department booking photograph bearing visible facial trauma sustained during a violent high-speed pursuit in St. Thomas on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Mr. Cabrera was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections under a $500,000 cash bail following his Tuesday morning Advice of Rights appearance in Superior Court, where he faces nine criminal charges—including three felony firearm counts, reckless endangerment, and possession of stolen property—after a stolen Toyota Corolla crashed near Vitraco Mall, killing one occupant and yielding a cache of four illegal weapons, including an AR-15 pistol and an automatic-switch Glock. Dangerous Flight Across Waterfront Arteries
Pursuit teams reported the fleeing vehicle blew through multiple red signals starting at Crown Mountain Road and cut recklessly across morning traffic. In an attempt to shake pursuing officers, the driver crossed into the westbound lanes of Edward Wilmot Blyden Boulevard while speeding east against traffic, eventually banking hard onto Georgia Francis Drive toward Raphune Hill.
The high-speed run came to an abrupt halt when the driver lost control and demolished the vehicle near the Vitraco Mall complex. As officers surrounded the scene, an unidentified passenger carrying a weapon darted behind the commercial strip and escaped on foot into the surrounding bush. Officer Duggins intercepted Cabrera as he scrambled out of the wreckage, where Cabrera immediately engaged the officer in a physical struggle while attempting to pull an object from his waistband.
Violent Struggle and a Crushed Companion
Officer Duggins seized Cabrera’s hands, dislodging a loaded handgun that clattered to the asphalt before assisting officers pinned and handcuffed him. A search conducted by Officer Clifford Callwood prior to placing Cabrera into police cruiser PD-312 uncovered an ammunition magazine packed with live rounds inside his left trousers pocket.
A third occupant, identified as Adonai Cozier, suffered fatal blunt-force trauma during the violent impact and was discovered pinned beneath the overturned chassis. Emergency Medical Technicians arrived on scene and pronounced Cozier dead. Cabrera, who sustained forehead lacerations and extensive contusions, received medical treatment at Schneider Regional Medical Center before being transported to Richard Callwood Command for formal processing.
Machine Gun Switch and Recovered Arsenal
Inside the crumpled Corolla, crime scene investigators uncovered a cache of unlicensed weapons. The inventory included an AR-15 style pistol, two 9mm Glock 19s, and a Glock 17 converted into a fully automatic firearm with an illegal conversion switch and a 31-round extended magazine. An NCIC database query revealed the converted Glock 17 had been reported stolen, and a firearms abstract confirmed Cabrera carries no license to possess weapons in the Virgin Islands.
Cabrera’s docket includes three counts of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, unauthorized possession of ammunition, carrying a firearm within 1,000 feet of a housing community, possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment, and interfering with an officer discharging their duties. Formal arraignment will follow in the St. Thomas-St. John District.
