CRUZ BAY — A targeted traffic enforcement sweep by the VIPD Special Operations Bureau in the St. John District resulted in a major weapons interdiction and a multi-island prisoner transport after officers uncovered a high-caliber pistol and a cache of loaded extended magazines hidden inside a vehicle's trunk. The operator of the vehicle, Yariel Guerrero-Roble, was arrested and transported across the sound to St. Thomas by police boat after admitting sole ownership of the illegal tactical arsenal.
The operation began at approximately 5:01 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026, when Officer Brad Francis and a tactical contingent of the Special Operations Bureau were conducting vehicular checkpoints on St. John. Officers observed a dark-colored Acura MDX traveling along the roadway with an illegally tinted front windshield, prompting them to initiate a standard traffic stop. As Officer Francis approached the driver's side door with his department-issued body camera activated, he immediately detected a strong, unmistakable odor of marijuana emanating from the interior cabin of the SUV.
Law enforcement ordered both Guerrero-Roble and his front-seat passenger, Jose Angel Jesus, to step out of the vehicle onto the roadside. A subsequent search of the center console quickly yielded three fully loaded magazines, including a high-capacity extended version. When Officer J. Rey asked the driver if he possessed a legal registration or license to carry firearms within the Virgin Islands, Guerrero-Roble admitted that he did not.
The search deepened as officers opened the trunk of the Acura MDX. Inside the rear compartment, Officer Francis located a heavy .45-caliber Glock 21 pistol loaded with an extended magazine and a live round chambered in the firing mechanism. When confronted with the discovery, the passenger immediately distanced himself from the contraband, stating to officers that he was simply getting a ride and knew nothing about the hidden weaponry. Guerrero-Roble, however, confessed to detectives that both the Glock 21 and the entire cache of ammunition belonged strictly to him.
Further investigative work revealed that the vehicle was operating as a complete "ghost car" on local roads. The license plate affixed to the exterior, FP-695, did not match the Acura MDX, and the driver confessed that he had knowingly swapped out the tags. The actual registered plate for the vehicle, JBC-325, belongs to a resident of Annas Retreat on St. Thomas. Due to the severity of the illegal firearm possession, Guerrero-Roble was handcuffed and loaded into a marked marine unit vessel, where the VIPD Marine Unit transported him across the water to St. Thomas for formal processing at the Richard Callwood Command by Forensics Bureau Detective Paula Prince.
CHARGED: Yariel Guerrero-Roble, arrested Friday on St. John by the VIPD Special Operations Bureau on charges of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm and Unauthorized Possession of Ammunition. (VIPD Mugshot)
