EDITORIAL: WHY THE BIG-CITY MECHANICS PUT GRUEL IN OUR GAS TANK

CHRISTIANSTED — If you’ve ever been to Pueblo Golden Rock on a busy morning, you know the routine. You see the legion of customers rushing in to grab those hot cups of Cream of Wheat or Oatmeal to-go. It’s a nutritious start to the day—good for the body, but terrible for a car engine.

Right now, the "mechanics" at a billion-dollar company called GoDaddy have treated our sister newspaper’s engine like a breakfast bowl. They’ve poured the digital equivalent of Cream of Wheat into our gas tank, and now the whole machine is sputtering.

When you try to visit the Virgin Islands Free Press on your phone, you might see a big "DANGER" sign saying the site isn't secure. It’s as if GoDaddy slammed the heavy accordion shutters down on our front door and walked away with the keys. They’ve let our digital locks rust shut, and now they’re telling you it’s "unsafe" to come inside.

It’s a lie. We are the same neighbors we were yesterday. The only thing that’s "unsafe" is a big tech company that can’t keep the fuel lines clear.

Even Elon Musk—who builds engines meant to survive the vacuum of space—knows that if you don't sweat the small stuff, the whole mission fails. If you can’t keep the "digital shutters" oiled and the gas tank clean, you shouldn't be in the business of hosting the news.

We are launching the St. Croix Sun to give islanders a voice that won't be silenced by rusty locks or "porridge" in the machinery. We are working to flush the V.I. Freep’s system and get it back on the road. We aren’t closing up shop; we’re just waiting for the bullies in Arizona to get their hands out of our engine.

The "Fargo" Protocol: Why Automated Incompetence is Killing our News

For the folks who want to peek under the hood, let’s talk about the "Wood Chipper" effect. In the movie Fargo, there’s a famous scene involving a wood chipper and a total lack of empathy. That is exactly the "customer service" model GoDaddy is running right now.

The Diagnostic Breakdown:

  • The Shredded Handshake: An SSL is a digital "handshake" between our server and your phone. GoDaddy has essentially taken our half of that handshake and fed it into a wood chipper. They destroyed the "Private Key" on their end, and now, your browser only sees the red spray of a broken connection.

  • The Mixed Content Mess: Because the master security certificate is shredded, the server starts throwing "Mixed Content" errors. The "engine" isn't just sputtering because of the Cream of Wheat; it's failing because the fuel injectors have been replaced with digital sawdust.

  • A Failure of Basic Engineering: Even Elon Musk understands that redundancy and automation are the baseline for high-tech success. You don't just "forget" to check the fuel injectors on a rocket, and you don't just "forget" to renew the security certificate on a news site—unless you just don't care about your customers.

The Bottom Line: There are plenty of smart people in the Virgin Islands who know that a "Not Secure" warning is just a technical glitch. But GoDaddy doesn't care about the smart people, and they certainly don't care about the grandmothers. They only care about the machine. We are writing this to let them know that we’ve seen what’s in the chipper—and we’re coming for our keys.
