ST. CROIX — The Virgin Islands Waste Management Authority (VIWMA) announced Sunday morning that the Anguilla Landfill will remain closed until further notice. While response teams have significantly reduced the active fire within the facility, officials warn that internal conditions remain "unstable and unsafe" for the general public.

Since the fire began, emergency personnel and VIWMA operations crews have maintained continuous suppression efforts throughout the weekend. Despite the progress made in containing the blaze, the Authority emphasized that extending the closure is a necessary precaution to protect residents, waste haulers, and staff.

“Unauthorized access puts individuals at risk and disrupts ongoing emergency operations,” the Authority stated in a press release. Residents and commercial haulers are strictly reminded not to enter or approach the landfill site during this period.

VIWMA Executive Director Hannibal "Mike" Ware indicated that updates will be provided as conditions evolve. The facility will only resume normal operations once a full safety assessment is completed.
